The Economist featured the work by Charles Taylor on the periodic recurrence of cicadas, which feed on the roots of trees and hence lead to an increase in pesticide use in counties with tree crops whenever they reemerge every 13 or 17 years. The higher pesticide use is associated with higher infant mortality as well a reduction is high school graduation 18 years later.
